The biggest conservation area in the Alps...

Hohe Tauern National Park

...right on the Hotel Sonnblick doorstep. Investigate the Hohe Tauern National Park with its wild original landscapes which includes glaciers, cliff faces, meadows and the cultural mining landscape; a place where there has been a great deal of effort put in to looking after the Alpine meadows. The highlight of the National Park is of course the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner, at a height of 3798 metres. 180m² of the national park is covered with eternal ice, where the Kitzsteinhorn with the first glacier ski area is a part of this area. In total the Hohe Tauern National Park covers an area of 1800m², where you don’t just get to enjoy the landscape, but attentive visitors can also see animal species which have become rare.

Kaprun Alpine Reservoir

A particular highlight in Kaprun are the Alpine reservoirs, which are a key part of the National Park and a popular excursion destination. A trip to the reservoir starts at Alpenhaus Kesselfall to the rear of Kaprun valley, where modern buses take you to the Lärchenwand-incline lift, one of the biggest incline lifts in Europe. After an ascent via the incline lift you continue your journey via bus. During a guided tour of the dam wall you get to learn more about how power is generated from water and the history of power plant construction.

Mittersill National Park centre

In 2007 Welten National Park in Mittersill was set up where the visitor can learn about the exciting cultural and natural landscape in the National Park from the nine ‘stations’. With lots of animations and presentations, the National Park centre is not just interesting for adults, but is also thrilling and exciting for children – which makes it a perfect excursion destination for families.
